DIGVIJAY OF KARNA – (BORI CE)

This is the most awaited thread and finally posting on the demand of karnians. According to BORI CE, hypocrite reporter vaisampayana has skipped the ‘Digvijay Conquest’ of Karna during live telecast of reporting. As usual some illiterate pandava fanatics began to cry like loser and claimed that there was no Digvijay conquest by Karna. As we told earlier, these morons haven’t read BORI CE still laments for it’s authenticity. So here is the Digvijay of karna which was skipped by vaisampayana during live telecast

NOTE - We have translated BORI CE with reference to Bibek Debroy translation (a scholar who translated BORI CE more accurately as compare to KMG). However it should be note that Debroy version is NOT BORI CE because many times KMG (Bengali script based) has translated BORI CE Verses more accurately as compare to Debroy version. Hence if any contradiction/error/mistranslation occurs then one should prefer the word to word translation of BORI CE. Footnotes by KMG and B.Debroy are not a part of BORI CE script hence it should be avoided

■ PART – 1 : DIGVIJAY CONQUEST OF DIGVIJAYI KARNA

Narrative-1: Drona Parv, Section-4

Debroy Version –

[Bhishma to Karna]

You went to Rajapura and killed the Kambojas. You went to Girivraja and vanquished the kings, with Nagnajit at the forefront, and the Ambashthas, the Videhas and the Gandharas. O Karna! In earlier times, you brought those who dwelt in the Himalayas and Kiratas, who were harsh in battle, under Duryodhana’s suzerainty. In every such place, you fought for Duryodhana’s welfare. O brave one! O Karna! You conquered many greatly energetic ones.

Passage : Karna Parv, Section-4

BORI CE – किरातानामधिपतिः सागरानूपवासिनाम् | देवराजस्य धर्मात्मा प्रियो बहुमतः सखा ||१५|| भगदत्तो महीपालः क्षत्रधर्मरतः सदा |

Debroy Version - Bhagadatta was the lord of the kiratas and those who dwelt along the shores of the ocean.

EXPLAINATION –

Bhishma himself narrated some part of Digvijay conquest where karna had conquered many kingdoms in the different directions. Below is the list of kingdoms conquered by karna in his conquest

1. Rajapura
2. Kambojas
3. Girivraja
4. Nagnajit
5. Ambashthas
6. Videhas
7. Gandharas
8. Kiratas (Defeat of bhagadatta)

MISCONCEPTION ABOUT KARNA DEFEATING BHAGDATTA –

According to Bhishma, Karna had defeated the kiratas who lived in himalaya mountain. There were mainly two kiratas kingdoms - one in himalaya mountain and later in indra mountain. Bhagadatta was also ruler of one of the kiratas kingdom.

BORI CE –हिमवद्दुर्गनिलयाः किराता रणकर्कशाः | दुर्योधनस्य वशगाः कृताः कर्ण त्वया पुरा ||६||

KMG Version - The Kiratas, fierce in battle, dwelling in the fastness of HIMAVAT, were formerly, O Karna, made by thee to own Duryodhana's sway

Karna, Bhima and Arjuna had defeated kiratas but irony is that Karna subjugated the kiratas in north-east direction (lived in Himalaya mountain) whereas Bhima managed to conquere the kiratas in the east direction (lived in Indra mountain) hence both kirata kings were different. Bhagadatta's kingdom pragjyotishas and kirata kingdom in himalaya both are located in himalaya region (today's aasam). Check out map of ancient Bharatvarsha. This sanctioned the fact that only karna defeated bhagdatta in battle. Arjuna also faced kiratas army but only after the death of their king bhagadatta just like karna eliminated panchalas after the death of king draupad. Hence ONLY karna was the warrior who defeated bhagadatta (the valiant warrior who almost killed arjuna twice later saved by Krishna)

King bhagadatta was one of the king conquered by mighty Jarasandha as Bhagadatta bowed his head before Jarasandha.

BORI - (Sabha Parv, Section-13)

KMG Version -

He also that beareth on his head that gem which is known as the most wonderful on earth, that king of the Yavanas, who hath chastised Muru and Naraka, whose power is unlimited, and who ruleth the west like another Varuna, who is called Bhagadatta, and who is the old friend of thy father, hath bowed his head before Jarasandha, by speech and specially by act.

http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m02/m02014.htm

Debroy Version -

Bhagadatta was your father’s old friend. On his forehead he wears a divine gem that is known as the supreme gem on earth. He is the one who punished the two yavana kings Mura and Naraka and now, with unlimited powers like Varuna, is the king of the west.Though he has lowered his head through his speech and especially his deeds, his heart actually holds affection for you, like a father does.

So we can safely conclude that Karna was far superior to Bhagadatta as Karna beat Jarasandha who conquered Bhagadatta

DEBROY Version –

They followed the great-souled one, as he penetrated your army. O great king! Jaya, Satvata Kritavarma, the king of Kamboja and Shrutayu countered Dhananjaya. They had ten thousand rathas as their followers—the Abhishahas, the Shurasenas, the Shibis, the Vasatis, the Machellakas, the Lalitthyas, the Kekayas, the Madrakas, the Narayanas, the Gopalas and masses of Kambojas. They were revered as brave ones and had earlier been vanquished by Karna.

EXPLAINATION –

Sanjaya again mentioned more kingdoms conquered by Karna during his digvijay conquest as follows

1. King jaya
2. King satvata
3. King Kritavarma (Defeat of samsaptakas)
4. King of kamboja (2nd proof)
5. King shrutayu
6. Abhishahas
7. Shurasenas
8. Shibis
9. Vasatis
10. Machellakas
11. Lalitthyas
12. Kekayas
13. Madrakas (Defeat of king shalya)
14. Narayanas (Defeat of lord Krishna)

[Krishna to Duryodhana]

There is a large number of one hundred million cowherds, equal to me in strength. They are famous as Narayanas and all of them are warriors who have fought in battle. These warriors, who are unassailable, will be the soldiers on one side. I will not bear weapons and will not fight in the battle. I will be on the other side.

Krishna had offered Duryodhana 10 crores cowherds (known as gopalas as per sanskrit) and Narayana army of dwarka. Karna had conquered Narayana army and Gopalas (more than 10 crores) during his digvijay conquest sanctioned the fact that Karna had conquered the dwarka after defeating Krishna in the battle. Here is the 1st proof for karna vanquishing samsaptakas led by susharma

Debroy Version –

[Satyaki to Yudhistira]

They have been born in the lineage known as Anjana and are valorous. They are mounted by many mlecchas, who are armed and find delight in battle. O king! These elephants have the complexion of clouds and are exuding like clouds. If they are urged by the elephant-riders, they never retreat. O king! They cannot be vanquished until they have been killed. O king! You can see the rathas. These maharathas are princes and have the name of Rukmarathas. O lord of the earth! They are skilled in fighting on chariots and on elephants. They are supreme in knowledge of fighting and are skilled in fighting with their fists. They are accomplished in fighting with clubs and also skilled in fighting at close quarters. They have swords as weapons and can attack with the sword and the shield. These brave ones are skilled in knowledge and seek to rival one another. O king! They always vanquish a large number of men in battle. O king! They were vanquished by Karna and follow Duhshasana. They were applauded by Vasudeva as supreme rathas.

EXPLAINATION –

Maharatha princes Rukmarathas (mlecchas warriors) were defeated by karna. These mlecchas warriors were praised by Krishna for their power

[Dhritrashtra to Sanjaya]

He is the one who defeated powerful enemies who were extremely difficult to vanquish—the Gandharas, the Madrakas, the Matsyas, the Trigartas, the Tanganas, the Shakas, the Panchalas, the Videhas, the Kunindas, the Kashis, the Kosalas, the Suhmas, the Angas, the Pundras, the Nishadas, the Vangas, the Kichakas, the Vatsas, the Kalingas, the Taralas, the Ashmakas and the Rishikas. In earlier times, using his strength, the brave one defeated all of these in battles. Just as Uchchaihshrava is supreme among horses, Vaishravana is supreme among yakshas and the great Indra is supreme among gods, Karna was supreme among those who could strike

EXPLAINATION –

King Dhritrashtra himself narrated about all kingdoms conquered by karna during digvijay conquest. Digvijay at it’s peak

1. Gandharas
2. Madrakas (2nd proof for the defeat of shalya)
3. Matsyas (Defeat of keechak)
4. Trigartas (Defeat of samsaptakas led by susharma)
5. Tanganas
6. Shakas
7. Panchalas (Defeat of Draupad)
8. Videhas
9. Kunindas
10. Kashis
11. Kosalas
12. Suhmas
13. Angas (Defeat of another Angraaj)
14. Pundras
15. Nishadas (Defeat of eklavya0
16. Vangas
17. Kechakas
18. Vatsas
19. Kalingas
20. Taralas
21. Ashmakas
22. Rishikas

Karna had conquered the trigartas kingdom and susharma was the ruler of trigartas kingdom. In kurushetra, small portion of trigartas army became samsaptakas.

Passage – (Drona Parv, Section-99)

BORI CE –

ते तु तं रथवंशेन महता पर्यवारयन् |

DEBROY Version -

There were three thousand Trigartas, skilled in fighting. They surrounded him with a large army of chariots. They had resolved to fight and had sworn to be samshaptakas

We can safely conclude that arjuna faced only exhausted army of trigartas (known as samsaptakas) unlike karna alone who faced entire army of trigartas during digvijay conquest. Irony is that some samsaptakas defeated and captured arjuna and when arjuna fell in the danger as usual Krishna saved him from samsaptakas soldiers

Panchalas were single-handedly defeated by karna during digvijay conquest again sanctioned the defeat of King Draupad

Apart from King Susharma and King Draupad, Karna single-handedly defeated great archer Eklavya as eklavya was the king of nishadas who were defeated by

DEBROY Version –

He was challenged by Ekalavya, the king of Nishadha, who was thought to be invincible. But Krishna killed him and robbed him of his life, forcefully smashing him against a rock, like Jambha.

King Susharma, King Draupad and Great King Eklavya were vanquished by Karna in battle during Digvijay conquest

Sprinkling fried grain and sandalwood powder over him, the people said, “O king! It is through good fortune that your sacrifice has been completed without any impediments.” There were others present, who were not careful in speech. They told the king, “Your sacrifice has not been equal to Yudhishthira’s sacrifice. It does not equal a sixteenth part of that sacrifice.” Thus some, who were voluble, spoke to that lord of men. However, his well-wishers said, “Your sacrifice has surpassed all the others.

EXPLAINATION –

Karna has mentioned all kings from all 4 directions used to pay income tax to the Duryodhana sanctioned the Digvijay conquest by Karna. It’s Karna who suggested Duryodhana to conduct sacrifice as he brought all kings under the subjugation of his friend. Some holy brahmanas asked him to conduct ‘Vaishnava Sacrifice’ which was equal, perhaps superior to ‘Rajsuya Sacrifice’ of Yudhistira because only Lord Vishnu was capable to Vaishnava Sacrifice. As per instructions, Duryodhana had performed Vaishnava sacrifice successfully and most of people among the public were happy for their favourite king. As usual some moron panadava fanatics among the public began to cry as if Rajsuya was superior to Vaishnava. However all well-wishers of Duryodhana publicly announced Vaishnava sacrifice to be superior to Rajsuya and as usual those few followers of evil triplet pandava became silent and vanished from there (this sanctioned that these jealous morons fled away in shame by covering their faces)
