PART 4 - MISCONCEPTION : ARJUN USED PASHUPATASTRA TO KILL JAYADRATH
It's really getting funny,For killing an insect/parasite like Jayadrath, you need Baygon Spray and not a weapon like Pashupatastra,LOL.
Below are the words of Lord Krishna to Arjuna which make people think that he used Pashupatastra to kill Jayadrath-
"O Partha, there is an indestructible, supreme weapon of the name of Pasupata. With it the god Maheswara slew in battle all the Daityas! If thou rememberest it now, thou shalt then be able to slay Jayadratha tomorrow. If it is unknown to thee (now), adore within thy heart the god having the bull for his mark. Thinking of that god in thy mind, remember him, O Dhananjaya! Thou art his devotee."
This entire saga of Pashupatastra might appear a little confusing to some readers. During Kairita Parva, Arjun first goes into penance to please Lord Shiva. Then Lord Shiva and Arjun have a fight. Lord Shiva wants to test Arjun whether he is a capable person to behold his personal weapon. After Shiva is pleased, He gives the art of invoking/revoking of the Pashupati astra to Arjun. Yet on the 13th night, Krishna and Arjun again go back to Shiva. Arjun obtains the weapon (again?).
Now coming to above Passage,Here Krishna says that if Arjun remembers Pasupata weapon,he will be able to Slay Jayadrath. If its unknown then he has to remember Lord Shiva, whose devotee he is.
Basically Pashupatastra was a blessing of Lord Shiva.Krishna says 'If You remember Pasupata then you will be able to kill Jayadrath',he does not Say that Arjun needs to Shoot Pashupatastra to kill Jayadrath,Its presence was only needed in form of a blessing by Pashupatinath to alone break the eleven Akshauni Shakata Vyuh which Drona was going to create next day.
REASONS WHY ARJUNA DID NOT KILL JAYADRATH USING PASHUPATASTRA -
1)LORD SHIVA WARNS ARJUN NOT TO USE PASHUPATASTRA ON WEAKER ENEMY,ELSE IT WOULD DESTROY THE WHOLE WORLD -
Narrative:
Said by Mahadev to Arjun-“But, O son of Pritha, this weapon should not be hurled without adequate cause; for if hurled at any foe of little might it may destroy the whole universe”
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m03/m03040.htm
Jayadrath was clearly a lesser foe of Arjuna so use of Pashupatastra on Jayadrath could have destroyed the whole universe.
--------------------------
2)PASHUPATASTRA COMES WITH ITS OWN BOW,WHILE ARJUNA USED GANDIVA BOW TO SHOOT THE ASTRA WHICH KILLED JAYADRATH,AGAIN PROVES THAT ASTRA WAS NOT PASHUPATA -
Pashupatastra is not just an arrow, its a bow fixed with an arrow on it.It can be shot only with that bow.
Narrative:
(Shiva to Krishna and Arjuna)
There is a celestial lake full of Amrita, not far from this place, ye slayers of foes! There were kept some time back, that celestial bow and arrow of mine. With them I slew in battle all the enemies of the gods. Bring hither, ye Krishna, that excellent bow with arrow fixed on it.'
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07078.htm
So Pashupatastra appears to be an arrow fixed on a bow which Mahadeva gave Arjuna, and it had to be discharged with that bow only.Even Shiva Purana mentions this.
Arjun uses Gandiva to Shoot the weapon which beheaded Jayadrath -
Narrative:
That shaft, sped from Gandiva, coursing swiftly, snatched Jayadratha's head away, like a hawk snatching away a smaller bird from the top of a tree.
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07142.htm
Here Arjun used Gandiva to shoot that arrow, while Pashupatastra can be shot only with its own bow,not other bows,Again proves that Arjun did not used Pashupatastra
---------------------------
3)PASHUPATASTRA IS A FIRE WEAPON WHICH CONSTANTLY EMITS SPARKS OF FIRE WHILE THE WEAPON USED BY ARJUN TO KILL JAYADRATH WAS A THUNDER WEAPON -
Description of Pashupatastra -
"Of vast proportions, it seemed to constantly vomit sparks of fire."
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m13/m13a014.htm
Description of weapon used by Arjuna to kill Jayadrath -
Dhananjaya, licking the corners of his mouth, quickly shot that arrow which he had taken up for Jayadratha's slaughter, that arrow, viz., whose touch resembled that of Indra's thunder, which was inspired with mantras and converted into a celestial weapon
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07142.htm
Here its clear that the weapon used for Jayadrath killing was a different one as it did not have any fire,it resembled the thunder of Indra.
-----------------------------
4)PASHUPATASTRA HAS ONE FOOT,1000 HEADS,1000 STOMACHAS,1000 ARMS,1000 TOUNGUES AND 1000 EYES.....CLEARLY DIFFERENT FROM WHAT ARJUNA SHOT ON JAYADRATH -
Pashupatastra's description -
Possessed of one foot, of large teeth, and a thousand heads and thousand Stomachs, it has a thousand arms, a thousand tongues, and a thousand eyes. Indeed, it seemed to continually vomit fire.
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m13/m13a014.htm
(Pashupati also means Lord of Animals, its an avtar of Lord Shiva.)
Descritpion of What Arjuna shot to kill Jayadrath -
Hearing these words (of Krishna), Dhananjaya, licking the corners of his mouth, quickly shot that arrow which he had taken up for Jayadratha's slaughter, that arrow, viz., whose touch resembled that of Indra's thunder, which was inspired with mantras and converted into a celestial weapon, which was capable of bearing any strain, and which had always been worshipped with incense and garlands. That shaft, sped from Gandiva, coursing swiftly, snatched Jayadratha's head away, like a hawk snatching away a smaller bird from the top of a tree.
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07142.htm
Its pretty clear that what Arjuna used to kill Jayadrath was not Shiva's weapon Pashupatastra but some other weapon.
------------------------------
5)CELESTIAL WEAPON USED TO BEHEAD JAYADARTH DID NOT DO THE COMPLETE TASK,IT ONLY BEHEADED HIM,BUT ARJUN FIRED ORDINARY ARROWS WHICH TOOK JAYADRATH'S HEAD TO HIS FATHER,OUTSTANDING EXHIBITION OF PERFECT ARCHERY SKILL -
Narrative:
Dhananjaya, then, with his shafts, sent that head along in the welkin (without allowing it to fall down). For grieving his foes and gladdening his friends, the son of Pandu, by shooting his shafts repeatedly at it, sent that head outside the limits of Samantapanchaka. Meanwhile, king Vriddhakshatra, the father of thy son-in-law, endued with great energy, was, O sire, engaged in his evening prayers.
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07142.htm
It's clear that Arjuna had to do most of the task himself and not by the aid of celestial weapon. He beheaded Jayadrath using a Divine weapon but to carry his to Vriddhakshatra,Arjun used his archery skill and with ordinary shafts sped from Gandiva,he achieved this.
What's the point of having such a versatile weapon then if you have to do most of the task yourself?
Had Arjuna used Pashupatastra,it himself would have done this task of carrying Jayadrath's head to his father's lap.
