GANESHA, KARTIKEYA & ARJUN.

Ganesha is widely known as the scribe who jotted down every precious Vyas verse of Mahabharata. Every parva began with an ode to Narayan (Krishn) and Nara (Arjun).

How else is Ganesha related to Arjun? Here’s how:

1] Via Skanda/ KARTIKEYA/Murugan , the war-God. He was Shiva’s son and Ganesha’s brother.

Kartikeya’s ‘other’ name Indrasenapati has 2 connotations.

1] Husband of Indrasena (Indra’s daughter)  2] Commander-in-chief of Indra’s sena (army). Thus Kartikeya was Indra’s army Commander AND Arjun’s brother-in-law!

A variation of this tale as per Skanda Purana has Devasena (Indrasena) = daughter of Vishnu. Thus, Krishn (Vishnu) and Kartikeya are not only Arjun’s brothers-in-law … but also father-in-law & son-in-law to each other! Phew!

2] MALLIKARJUNA temple dedicated to Mallika (Parvati) and Arjun (yep, its another name for SHIVA!!!)

Once Narada gave a divine fruit to Shiva and Parvati. They held a contest between their 2 sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya – whoever roams the entire Universe 3 times and come back first will get the fruit. Kartikeya immediately rushed on his chariot and started to roam the universe at high speed. By the time he returned, Lord Ganesha was already declared the winner and sat eating the delicious fruit!

Ganesha had symbolized his parents as The Universe and thus circled around them thrice. His wisdom , however, found no admiration in Kartikeya. The angry Kartikeya marched off to a hill. Hence Shiva-Parvati had to descend upon the hill and cajole him out of his anger. The Mallikarjuna temple is devoted in their honour.

Ganpati Bappa Morya! Jai Arjun!
