REGARDING KARNA SPARING BHIMA'S LIFE ON 14TH DAY -
This is the only victory of Karna against Bhima and for which Blorndies(Blind followers of Lordy Karna) are so proud :P So lets do a comprehensive analysis on this 'so called' victory of Karna and the circumstances under which he achieved this victory.
Its a bit long post but request you all to read it completely, especially the ones who boast Karna sparing Bhima.
So the story goes like this,Shri Krishna and Arjuna go inside the Chakravyuh, after sometime Yudhishthir gets worried as he does not get any info. about Arjun. So he sends Bhima inside the chakravyuh to assist Arjun and find what's going on inside.
- After facing Drona,Bhima faces Karna, defeats him and Pushes him to retreat.
KARNA RETREATING FIRST TIME -
Narrative:
The mighty car-warrior Karna then speedily jumping down, O king, from his steedless car, mounted the car of Vrishasena. The valiant Bhimasena then, having vanquished Karna in battle, uttered a loud shout deep as the roar of the clouds.
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07125.htm
- In the next chapter,we see Duryodhan telling Drona about Bhima defeating all the troops of Kauravas and approaching Jayadrath, means Bhima was constantly fighting against Kaurvas, but no signs of Karna here.
Narrative:
(Duryodhan to Drona)
'O grinder of foes, Arjuna and Bhimasena, and unvanquished Satyaki, and many mighty car-warriors, defeating all our troops, have succeeded in approaching the ruler of the Sindhus.
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07126.htm
- Later chapter shows that after all Kuru warriors were greatly afflicted by Bhima, our lordy Karna comes back to fight with him.
Narrative:
"Sanjaya said, 'During the progress, O monarch, of that battle, making the hair stand on end, and when all the combatants were filled with anxiety and greatly afflicted, the son of Radha. O bull of Bharata's race, proceeded against Bhima for battle, like an infuriated elephant in the forest proceeding against another infuriated elephant.'
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07127.htm
- Bhima who was willing to meet Arjun tried to avoid Karna but later accepted his challenge and started fighting with him.Result was the same,Karna was mangled by Bhima's arrows and was forced to turn back.
KARNA RETREATING SECOND TIME -
Narrative 1:
Those winged shafts, piercing through Karna's body, entered the earth, like the rays of the sun piercing through the clouds. Afflicted with arrows and his bow cut off, Karna, though proud of his manliness, felt great pain and proceeded to another car.'"
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07127.htm
Narrative 2:
"Dhritarashtra said, 'What, indeed, O Sanjaya, did Duryodhana say when he saw that Karna turning away from the field upon whom my sons had reposed all their hopes of victory? How, indeed, did the mighty Bhima, proud of his energy, fight? What also, O son, did Karna do after this, beholding Bhimasena in that battle resemble a blazing fire?'
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07128.htm
- In the next chapter(Chapter 128,KMG) we read that Karna comes back on a new Chariot which is duly equipped with weapons and fresh, and he continues his fight with Bhimasena. While Bhima was on his existing chariot, his weapons getting exhausted, fighting other Kuru warriors as well,he being in the midst of Chakravyuh,so no back up for him at all and no support from his men.
Narrative:
"Sanjaya said, 'Mounting upon another car that was duly equipped Karna once more proceeded against the son of Pandu, with the fury of the Ocean tossed by the tempest"
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07128.htm
- The fight of Bhima and Karna continues, because Karna came back fresh with weapons,we see him staying for a while and not getting beaten quickly, however all the weapons of Karna were nullified by Bhima,we don't see any special impact by Karna, infact Bhima cuts off Karna's bow twice, destroys his chariot and makes him unconscious.
Narrative:
Then Bhima once more cut Karna's bow at the handle, O sire, and despatched by means of his shafts the latter's steeds, white as conchs, to the abode of Yama, and the son of Pandu also felled his enemy's charioteer from his niche in the car. Then Karna, the son of Vikartana, made steedless and driverless, and covered in that battle (with shafts), became plunged into great anxiety. Stupefied by Bhima with his arrowy showers, he knew not what to do.
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07129.htm
- Now,Karna is lying Stupefied on the battlefield,Duryodhan gets worried,Bhima might consume Karna there :P So he send his Brother 'Durjaya' to help Karna.
Narrative:
Beholding Karna placed in the distressful plight, king Duryodhana, trembling with wrath, commended (his brother) Durjaya, saying, 'Go, O Durjaya! There the son of Pandu is about to devour the son of Radha! Slay that beardless Bhima soon, and infuse strength into Karna
- Don't hope any result from Sons of Dhritrashtra,Bhima kills him infront of Karna's eyes,Lordy starts crying :P
Narrative:
Then Bhimasena, excited with wrath, piercing with his shafts the very vitals of Durjaya, and his steeds and driver, despatched them of Yama's abode. Then Karna, weeping in grief, circumambulated that son of thine, who, adorned with ornaments, lay on the earth, writhing like a snake.
- After the death of Durjaya,Karna starts attacking Bhima, this time Karna was not on his car,so a stupid decision by him,and as expected,he got defeated quickly by Bhima and mounted to another car.
Narrative:
Sanjaya said, 'Then the carless Karna, thus once more completely defeated by Bhima, mounted another car and speedily began to pierce the son of Pandu.
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07130.htm
- Karna on a fresh chariot once more starts fighting Bhima, gets mangled again by Bhima's arrows. Now Karna full of wrath and 'Licking the Corners of his mouth' hurled a Vajra like weapon,it pierced Bhima but did not do much damage. Then Bhima full of wrath hurls a mace and destroys another Chariot of Karna.
Narrative:
Then, O bull of Bharata's race, the mighty-armed Bhima, with a couple of razor-faced arrows, cut off the standard of Karna. And then he slew, with a number of shafts his enemy's charioteer. Abandoning that steedless and driverless and standardless car, Karna. O Bharata, cheerlessly stood on the earth, drawing his bow.
- Frustrated Duryodhan again sends one of his brother,Durmukha to protect Karna, but Bhima kills him too infront of Karna's eyes,Then Karna mounts on Durmukha's chariot -
Narrative:
Beholding Durmukha desirous of supporting the Suta's son in that battle, the son of the Wind god was filled with delight and began to lick the corners of his mouth. Then resisting Karna the while with his shafts, the son of Pandu quickly drove his car towards Durmukha. And in that moment, O king, with nine straight arrows of keen points, Bhima despatched Durmukha to Yama's abode,Upon Durmukha's slaughter, the son of Adhiratha mounted upon the car of that prince and looked resplendent, O king, like the blazing sun.
- Bhima and Karna start fighting again,no difference in results,Karna gets mangled by Bhima's arrows and as usual adopts his most favorite Plan, which is fleeing from battlefield :P While Bhima continued to fight.
KARNA RETREATING THIRD TIME-
Narrative:
Then, O king, Karna thus afflicted by Bhima's might, became exceedingly distressed. And that illustrious warrior then fled, forsaking the battle, borne away by his fleet steeds. The Atiratha Bhimasena, however, drawing his bow adorned with gold, stayed in battle, looking resplendent like a blazing fire.
- In the next chapter we read Dhritrashtra lamenting on the boasting and inability of Karna to defeat Bhima, though Karna fought resolutely, still he could not defeat Bhima, instead himself got defeated and fled.Later Ashwathama,Kripa and Salya jointly attacked Bhima, still could not even Stand infront of Bhima. It means Bhima continued fighting without taking any breaks.
Narrative:
O Sanjaya, even Aswatthaman and the ruler of the Madras and Kripa, united together, could not stand before Bhimasena. Even these know the terrible might, equal to that of ten thousand elephants, of Bhima, endued with the energy of Marut himself, as also his cruel intents
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07131.htm
- Bhima again starts to fight against Karna,Five of Duryodhan's brothers come on Bhima's way,as usual Bhima kills them all infront of Karna's eyes -
Narrative:
Bhima, however, quickly rushed against Karna, though resisted by thy sons. Then the Kurus, surrounding Karna, covered Bhimasena with showers of straight shafts. With five and twenty arrows, O king, Bhima, armed with his formidable bow, despatched all those bulls among men to Yama's abode with their steeds and charioteers.
- After Killing five brothers of Duryodhan,Bhima again proceeds to Karna, pierces his mail with nine arrows, shrouded by Bhima's arrows,Karna again flees.
KARNA RETREATING FOURTH TIME.
Narrative:
Then, O monarch, Bhima, excited with rage, sped nine straight shafts at the Suta's son. Those keen shafts, piercing through Karna's coat of mail and right arm, entered the earth like snakes into an ant-hill. Shrouded with showers of shafts shot from Bhimasena's bow, Karna once more turned his back upon Bhimasena.
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07132.htm
- Frustrated Duryodhan again sends his six brothers to protect Karna, yet again Bhima slays them all infront of Karna, again Karna starts crying :P
Narrative:
All of them were well-versed in every mode of warfare. The mighty car-warrior, Bhimasena, however, felled each of those sons of thine thus rushing against him, with a single arrow. Deprived of life, they fell down on the earth like trees uprooted by a tempest. Beholding those sons of thine, all mighty car-warriors, O king, thus slain, Karna, with tearful face, recollected the word of Vidura
- Karna changes his chariot and again starts fighting Bhima,Duryodhan again becomes worried that Bhima might kill Karna,so he again sends his seven brothers, but Bhima with seven arrows kills all seven of them again infront of Karna and our lordy could not do anything, just a spectator of destruction caused by Bhima.
Narrative:
The son of Kunti, then, O monarch, drawing his beautiful bow with great force and firm grasp, and knowing that his foes were but men, aimed seven shafts. And lord Bhima in great rage sped at them those shafts, effulgent as solar rays. Indeed, Bhimasena recollecting his former wrongs, shot those shafts as if for extracting the life from out of the bodies of those sons of thine
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07133.htm
- Karna makes Bhima weaponless and Chariotless, but Bhima does not retreat-
Narrative:
His bow cut off, himself deprived of his car, Bhima, observant of the duties of his order, stood still for battle, keeping his (broken) car behind him.
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07135.htm
- Karna keeps shooting arrows on a weaponless/chariotless Bhima and atlast stops due to the vow given to Kunti-
Narrative:
The Suta's son, however, with his sharp shafts, repeatedly caused the distressed Bhima, to lose the sense. But Karna, recollecting the words of Kunti, took not the life of the unarmed Bhima.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
>> So this is the glory of Karna against Bhima,if we analyze it carefully, then its clear that Karna did not defeat Bhima, but Bhima's weapons were exhausted.Karna was left with weapons so he had the upperhand against the weaponless and unarmed Bhima.
>> Now from the Starting we see Bhima fighting on the same chariot, without any support from anyone,no weapon reloads,no backup men nothing. And Bhima did not get any time to rest,he was constantly fighting, and apart from fighting Karna,he had to fight against 31 sons of Dhritrashtra,Salya,Ashwathama and Kripacharya too, while Karna just had to fight Bhima and no one else.
>> Karna retreated 3-4 times and came back fresh,Bhima was constantly fighting so his weapons would be getting exhausted too.
>> Karna changed his chariot 7-8 times that means he got fresh weapons everytime,no chance of his weapons getting exhausted. While Bhima was on a single chariot throughout the day, never changed it.
>> Bhima was fighting Karna inside the Chakravyuh of Kauravas, means he would have to face the kaurav soldiers as well,it was like One vs Thousand fight, and that was the reason why Karna was able to run away four times.
>> Karna failed to protect 31 sons of Dhritrashtra,Bhima killed them all infront of Karna's eyes.
>> Karna made Bhima weaponless and chariotless once[When Bhima's weapons were almost exhausted],while Bhima made Karna weaponless and chariotless 4-5 times. If this fight was going inside the Chakravyuh of Pandavas, then Bhima would have spared Karna atleast 4-5 times due to Arjun's vow :P .
SO AFTER CHANGING THE CHARIOT SO MANY TIMES,RETREATING FOUR TIMES AND COMING BACK FRESH WITH WEAPONS,WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL IN MAKING YOUR OPPONENT WEAPONLESS AND CHARIOTLESS ?
